Winter Break

I took care of a lot of issues and remaining parts of the project this winter break.

This is my list:

  • I made the UI to begin the project
  • I made both good and bad outcomes
  • Added sound
  • Fixed all of my playability issues (and had to change the tree models because of that)
  • Added the player boundaries to the locomotion
  • Tested duck time to see if it was challenging enough

Week 10 – Final crit

This week was the final crit.

Luckily I recieved very good feedback!

I showed a little bit of what I showed for the mid crit, as well as all of the updates since then.

I showed a little video of the viewport in unity since I was struggling with my VR headset, as something was making it very laggy.

I still have a lot to work on but I am very proud of how the project is going.

Week 9

Unity updates:

Now that a lot of the functionality is covered, I am focusing on the material changes.

I dedicated this week to make the duck transition between normal duck to evil duck.

Apart from that, I managed to make the sky turn red and the lights to go darker.

Also, I’ve been testing what the best time to beat the game is.

My goal is to achieve the middle ground between: not too easy so it’s boring and not too hard so it’s super annoying.

Week 8

Finally, after a lot of work, I managed to get my duck to start moving!

Also, now after a few unity integrations, one can navigate the space.

Another visual update, is the fact that now i have grass that moves with the wind! Which adds a more peaceful look to contrast with the tension once the duck starts coming.

Week 7

I’m starting to focus on the main interactions and functionalities of Unity.

I still have a hard time grasping the code and the software so it’s taking a lot of research and a lot of time.

However, after a lot of effort, I made the buttons work!

Now, when the buttons are pressed, they push in and the switches turn into a different angle.

Also, I managed to make the light turn on when the puzzle is correct.

Week 6

I managed to start a unity project. First, I laid out all of the scene with the assets that I had, in order to test the sizes of things.

For now, everything looks good. I haven’t added any interaction yet.

Additionally, I designed how the puzzle is going to work: It’s going to be all switches and buttons, with clues in the same machines.

Also, we had the mid crit for this project!

I shared all of my progress, my worries, my ideas and my future challenges.

Thankfully, I had very good feedback

Week 5

This week we went to the Aesthetica Film Festival in York to help out in the VR Lab.

I didn’t make a lot of progress while I was there but watching all the VR projects nominated for the awards were really inspiring and gave me some great ideas for my story.

One thing that caught my attention was that most VR stories didn’t have interaction at all, and those who did had very little. I decided that i wanted interaction for my project, in order to take advantage of the medium.

The VR projects I liked the most were:

  • Midnight Story: Visual style and navigation guided with the eyes
  • Child of empire: Visual style and the way it carried you through space
  • The choice: Powerful storytelling, not great use of the medium
  • The one with the panda: Loved the way they showed flashbacks and moved you in space.

Week 4

I decided to start modeling for my project.

The first thing I did was to model the duck, with its evil and normal materials.

After that I decided to start modeling elements of the environment, such as:

  • Mountains
  • Trees
  • Plants
  • Flowers
  • Clouds

I also started designing the machine’s exterior for the puzzles

Week 3

After tutorials and talking to Ana and Eric. I decided to stick with the idea of the duck.

Basically, because it’s easily scalable and entertaining. I also like the idea of using a cute aesthetic.

Also, I decided I want to make the ambience creepier as the duck approaches the player.

This was my brainstorming:

Week 2

I thought of some possible ideas for my AR and VR projects.

I have 4 ideas for the VR and 2 for the AR.

I’m still not decided if I like the ones for the AR yet.

These are my notes from that day:
